Welcome to the Little Woe Club
You’ve made a very good choice, whether you’re a dark little beastie, ghoul, spook, hellcat or terribly cute demon … welcome to the delightfully macabre world of Wednesday’s Woe.
SPOOKY SEASON …
Can you believe it is October?! (Although it really is spooky season all year round for us at Wednesday’s Woe). Why do we love it so? Well, we could make a list of 100 things but we’ll give you a few to start with…
· Dressing up as your favourite horror or dark villain and embracing the vibe without anyone questioning it, go wild
· Creating beautifully dark and completely unhinged decorations for your house for people to admire … it really does make people happy, trust us
· No mandatory family events, just your own dark joy with like minded spooks (please don’t invite us to anything on Halloween, it is our Christmas thank you)
· Turning anything food related into something ghoulish and creepy
· It gives you the best excuse to watch, read, listen or visit anything weird and scary (live a little)
DID YOU KNOW?
Halloween is not American woes. Well, in origin at least, although they have wholeheartedly embraced it. It is, as some of you would know, traditionally Irish. Yes, we are proudly spooky Irish spawn here. There is more to this topic than we can fit in this dispatch, but it is worth checking out in your own time. Known as Sahmain (‘SAH-WIN’), the 31st of October through to 1st November is a Gaelic festival marking the end of harvest and the thinning of the veil (where spirits can enter or cross over into our realm). Like in many other cultures, this festival is about changing seasons, life and death, beginnings and endings; and in true Irish form, all things folklore and otherworldly are taken and honoured seriously and respectfully. Turnips may have turned to pumpkins over time, along with a few other things but at its heart, Halloween or Sahmain, continues to bring people together to honour and celebrate the spirit world.
WATCHING, READING, LISTENING, MAKING IN OCTOBER ...
Watching
‘Below’ on Netflix is our new watch (a small seaside town, supernatural sea monsters, great acting and eerie atmosphere – ticks all round). We are sentimental so of course we are rewatching Angelica Huston (the Goddess that she is) in her 1990s era with The Witches and The Addams Family I &II.
Reading
'Calling The Spirits – A History of Seances' by Lisa Morton – a fascinating topic and engaging writing style
Listening
My Victorian Nightmare podcast by Genevieve Manion - she is just brilliant
Making
Black Squid Risotto with skull head mushrooms – because why not
WW BEHIND THE SCENES …
Well, it has been quite a spooky whirlwind creating a spooky business. It is not for the faint of heart woes – lots of late nights with lots of horror and thriller movies keeping us company, worn out body parts from constructing fun things and some frightening moments along the way (hello small business administration, yes, we are talking about you, you are the true horror in this whole crazy journey). And… it really is quite hard to find just the right toads (who would have thought).
One thing that holds true, is that whatever you have in your dark little heart and imagination – you can make it happen – and it is worth it. It takes a whole spooky village to make something like Wednesday’s Woe happen. Thankfully, there is a group of ghouls, ghosts and hellcats who helped bring this little beastie of a brand to life. Thank you spooks.
We will be sending out occasional dark dispatches from the WW crypt, so keep an eye out in your inboxes. If you know anyone who would like to join in the Little Woe Club, point them to our website right here!
